The idea of attending therapy is uncomfortable to me. I am worried I will be stigmatized.

There is a sense of empowerment that comes from leaning into discomfort. A sense of discomfort can be healthy. It is your natural defense mechanism at play. Our natural defense mechanisms whisper to us at times of uncertainty. A new situation, an unfamiliar environment, and having some anxiety around these situations notify us that something is different and perhaps about to change.

However, chances are, if you are looking for a therapist, at least one aspect of your life is not working well, and the positive adaptive change that comes through therapy would lead to a better outcome for you and your loved ones. Helping yourself by learning new ways of coping is one of the healthiest things you can ever do.

Meredith empathizes with your discomfort surrounding first entering therapy and helps you feel at ease with her peaceful demeanor and dedication to supporting you. Meredith takes a collaborative approach as your therapist and will always listen to your thoughts and concerns regarding your therapy.

How many therapy sessions will I need?

Therapy with Meredith has no pre-set number of sessions. The chronic difficulties you may experience in your relationships, within yourself and your emotional world, have deep roots that have been reinforced in various ways throughout your life. Noticeably improving your subjective experience means rerouting old brain patterns and developing greater internal stability and psychological structure.

The duration of your therapy is entirely up to you. It depends on factors such as what you aim to achieve and how well you wish to understand yourself. These questions are not simple ones, and Meredith is happy to discuss them with you at any time and help you decide what is best for you.

Weekly sessions are strongly recommended if your calendar permits. If your schedule is unpredictable and you require maximum flexibility, Meredith offers nights and weekends for an additional fee.

What are the risks of engaging in therapy?

The therapeutic process is profound and enlightening. It can create a sense of emotional freedom and insight that allow you to live to your greatest potential. However, there is a level of uncertainty in transformation. You might notice an evolution of your interests, an improvement in your relationships with others and yourself, a reduced sense of fear of change and new experiences, as well as greater self-esteem.

There may also be moments when you have strong emotional reactions to thinking about and discussing events of the past, present, or future. It is important to note these feelings and discuss them with Meredith. Guilt, sadness, anxiety, grief, and anger, and changes in eating or sleeping patterns are common and healthy signs of progressing in therapy. Such experiences tend to be temporary and dissipate once they are discussed, understood, and processed. You will learn new ways of managing your emotions in your therapy but never feel pressured to disclose events you are not ready to reveal.

It takes courage to venture into therapy because you are entering a path of unknowns. However, if the path you are currently on is no longer working for you, Meredith can help you by supporting you to feel that you are no longer on your own.
